Personal fashion has got a big boost in the last few years. Boutique shops can now attract orders from all over the country, thanks to the Internet. Fashion designing has always had an appeal for the young and the talented.
But how do you get started?
If you are a high school student, you can get started in fashion designing by choosing a related course in a college. Some colleges offer a Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design. In this course, you will learn the history of designing, the basics of sketching, drawing, how to manipulate textiles and other related activities like fashion events, etc. If you can sew, knit and draw and color, you can progress faster. If you don’t have these skills, you can take a home economics class to learn how to sew. You can also read about art and design to get a hang of the industry.
Going to college is not the only way to become a designer. You can also attend courses in design conducted by some fashion schools. You could get a diploma or even go as far as a master’s degree in fashion designing.
Some college even offers an MBA in the business side of fashion designing.
There are no licensing requirements to be a fashion designer. If you have developed the skills because of a job you had earlier, you can design your own clothes. Fashion police may come and judge it based on their traditional markers. But mostly, if people like your clothes, that’s the biggest qualification you can earn.
The best way to learn the skills is to work under a designer for a couple of years. Switch every few years to pick up new skills and develop your own style. Working for design houses or merchandisers could be a profitable way to earn more, instead of struggling to create a name brand in the starting years.
